- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- For the Meat Layer:
- 500g (1 lb) ground beef or ground meat of choice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for cooking
- For the Cheese Topping:
- 2 cups shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or a mix)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the cubed potatoes and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Cook the Meat Layer:
In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sautรฉ until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
Stir in the tomato paste, tomato sauce, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Remove from heat.
Assemble the Shepherd's Pie:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
In a baking dish, spread the meat mixture evenly at the bottom. Top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing them out with a spatula.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the top is lightly golden.
Serve:
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
