Ingredients:
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4-5 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk (more if needed)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Directions:
Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water. Add a pinch of salt.
- Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat and cook the potatoes until they are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, mashing until smooth and creamy.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Keep warm while preparing the gravy.
Prepare the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually stir in the beef broth, followed by the Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme. Simmer until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Assemble the Dish:
- Serve the ground beef and gravy over a generous portion of mashed potatoes. Garnish with additional black pepper if desired.
