Ingredients
- For the Meat Layer:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme or oregano
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1/2 cup beef broth or water
- For the Potato Layer:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced into thin rounds
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Meat Layer:
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
Add the ground beef or lamb and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the tomato paste, paprika, thyme, salt, pepper, and beef broth. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
2. Prepare the Potato Layer:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, milk, butter, salt, and pepper over low heat until warm (do not boil).
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
Add the cooked meat mixture evenly over the potatoes.
3. Assemble the Casserole:
Top the meat layer with the remaining potatoes, followed by the rest of the cream mixture.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly on top.
4. Bake:
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, the cheese is bubbly, and golden brown.
5. Serve:
Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
Tips:
You can add vegetables like peas or carrots to the meat layer for added texture and flavor.
For extra cheesiness, layer a bit of shredded cheese between the potatoes and meat.
This comforting, creamy casserole is perfect for a cozy family dinner!
